The Master of Health Informatics (MHI) inter-professional program is committed to improving health data and health care quality for individuals as well as global populations. The program emphasizes health care data analytics and visualization; integration across data sets and systems; as well as practical expertise in health care data privacy and security. Graduates are prepared to be highly competent and ethical transformational leaders.
The MHI’s focus on developing critical thinking skills applied within an ethical framework for the purpose of informing individual and population health care is a manifestation of the mission’s emphasis. Through its online format, it promotes educational access for students from many cultures. Additionally for women, it advances gender-equal educational opportunities in technology based careers.
The MHI program is tailored towards working adults as well as full-time students who wish to learn what it takes to be a critical link in the complex healthcare environment. The 28-month, including two summer sessions, program prepares the graduate to be a general health informatics practitioner, leading efforts in key areas such as data analytics, data privacy and security, workflow analysis, quality management, and population health. Leadership development is emphasized across courses. Graduates will be poised for employment in leadership positions throughout health care systems and public health and government entities.
Prerequisites for Admission
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited higher education institution is required
- The preferred minimum GPA for admission into the MHI program is 3.0
- Applicants must have a background in basic statistics and introductory Medical Terminology

MHI 5070 Introduction to Health Informatics — 3 credits
A comprehensive introduction to health informatics concepts and applications. Topics include: introduction to data, information, and knowledge; electronic health records; interoperability of health systems; interface and reference terminologies, and classification systems; patient safety; public health informatics; clinical decision support systems; electronic prescribing. Being a very fluid field, new and current topics in health informatics will be introduced during each term as necessary. Must be taken the first semester of enrollment in the MHI program.
MHI 5090 Cyber Security in Health Information Systems — 3 credits
Examination of compliance, ethics, privacy, confidentiality, and security of data in health information systems. Issues related to transmission and exchange of electronic health information across health care systems will also be discussed as well as reviewing Office of Inspector General and Office of Civil Rights violations cases.
Prerequisite with concurrency: MHI 5070.
