FREN 1110 Elementary French I — 4 credits

The course teaches the understanding, speaking, reading and writing functional French for beginners and provides an introduction to the cultures of French-speaking countries. Offered in the College for Women.

FREN 1120 Elementary French II — 4 credits

The course is a continuation of FREN 1110. Offered in the College for Women.
Prerequisite: FREN 1110 with a grade of C- or better, or its equivalent.

FREN 2110 Intermediate French I — 4 credits

This course involves understanding, speaking, reading and writing functional French at a more advanced level. Offered in the College for Women.
Prerequisite: FREN 1120 or its equivalent.

FREN 2120 Intermediate French II — 4 credits

This is a fourth semester language class in which students improve their writing, reading and communication in French through an intensive grammar review, vocabulary building exercises, and literary and cultural readings. Offered in the College for Women.
Prerequisite: FREN 2110 or its equivalent.

FREN 2994 Topics — 4 credits

The subject matter of the course is announced in the annual schedule of classes. FREN 4994 is taught in French unless joined with FREN 2994. FREN 2994 can be cross-listed with another department and is taught in English. Content varies from year to year.

FREN 3130 Survey of French Literature I — 4 credits

This course is an exploration of the vision du monde in French literary landmarks from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
Prerequisites: FREN 3050W and FREN 3060W or instructor permission.

FREN 3140 Survey of French Literature II — 4 credits

This course is a further exploration of the vision du monde in French literary landmarks of the 18th through 20th centuries.
Prerequisites: FREN 3050W and FREN 3060W or instructor permission.

FREN 3250 French and Francophone Civilization & Cultures — 4 credits

This course is an introduction to French and francophone cultures and civilizations. Students acquire basic knowledge of French/francophone cultures and history. Art, film, current event topics and phonetics are included.
Prerequisite: FREN 3060W or its equivalent.

FREN 4604 Internship — 4 credits

FREN 4684 Directed Study — 4 credits

Directed study is provided for students whose unusual circumstances prohibit taking a regularly scheduled course but who need the material of that course to satisfy a requirement. Availability of this faculty-directed learning experience depends on faculty time and may be limited in any given term and restricted to certain courses.
Prerequisites: Faculty, department chair and dean approval.

FREN 4850 Senior Seminar or Senior Proj — 4 credits

French majors must choose between a senior seminar OR a final (honors) project. Either option chosen counts as fulfilling the senior seminar four-credit requirement. Option one: Senior seminar on French women's literature across the ages. Option two: Final (honors) project is an independent student project – academic and/or creative – on a topic related to French. The departmental chair must approve this project, and if the student chooses to combine this project with her honors degree, she must have her final honors project topic approved by both the honors program and French department chair.
Prerequisites: FREN 3140 and instructor approval, French majors only.
